Haunted house descriptive writing task

HAUNTED HOUSE

This little writing task has been adapted from http://www.teachit.co.uk to encourage students to use their imagination in a structured way for final assessments.

Firstly the students are shown an image on the Smartboard and given the task sheet as a starter which encourages them to write down their senses about the haunted house. Students are then asked to write a short piece about the haunted house using the task sheet to support their writing.

This task is excellent for encouraging students to read their stories and can also be used to make a Halloween display in the classroom.

Descriptive and creative writing task using images

DOORWAY TO HEAVEN

Another brilliant resource to get students using their imagination through a visual prompt.

Myself and Georgina Hooper collated images and chopped them up into packs so students had a choice of which image to select. Students were asked to select an image that appealed to them and then given the task sheet which directs them to write creatively and descriptively.

The results were amazing, with some great written pieces that could easily have been published as fiction. The students also enjoyed reading out their own stories to others which developed their speaking and listening skills.

Vocab word match game

PUZZLE

A great little activity to get students using dictionaries, think about word meanings and work together to problem solve.

There are 4 sets of words which need cutting up and mixing up (original word, synonyms, antonyms and homophones). The students then need to work together to sort the words out, using a dictionary if needed so that the original word has a synonym and antonym to match it. A separate match is made for homophones to go together.

For this particular task Georgina Hooper has used random words but you could use specialist words related to the topic/subject taught.

Holiday reading & writing task

FLIP FLOPS

Students will enjoy using their imaginations with this task which can be adapted for any age and ability.

In the task sheet they are given an imaginary £1000 pounds to spend on a holiday and they have to research holidays in the brochures then plan out what they’d take, where they’d go etc in a piece of descriptive and informative text.

The students can then present their work as part of speaking and listening in small groups to encourage them to justify and explain their choices.

All students enjoy this task and it can be carried out using brochures or by searching on the Internet, giving them chance to develop skills for the future in budgeting and booking a holiday.

Lovehearts reading and writing task

PEOPLE LOVEHEART

This mini project revolves around packets of Loveheart sweets and includes reading, writing, speaking and listening and a little bit of basic maths.

Students work through the different challenges from opening the sweets and identifying their features to writing descriptively about what they taste like and researching information about the history of Lovehearts, you could also try this with Skittles.

Projects for assessing combined English skills

WWW MAGNIFYING GLASS

These two tasks are mini projects that test the students combined reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Any subject material can be used, ours are from http://www.carelpress.com, but you could use newspaper or magazine articles instead as long as they are informative and relevant to the students.

Students are then asked to work independently to read the text, answer a set of questions then discuss the topic with others. There are short written tasks included such as creating informative posters or producing a piece of creative writing (just click on the links below).

I’ve found that the students like these tasks as they are linked and it allows them to learn new things without being taught in a didactic method. They can also research further when creating posters and new pieces of text.

Reading for information – skimming & scanning

READING UNDER A BULB TREE

The purpose of these activities is to get the students to speed up their reading in preparation for final exams and the world of work where time is short.

To start with students are independently asked to look at an article – this can be any article (we used a newspaper article on bullying) and used the task sheet (link below – laminate for future use) to make notes on keywords and overall information in the text. The students then compare what they have found and see if they have come to the same conclusion through discussion in small groups.

After the students have done a few of these article reviews (I asked them to look at 4 different articles separately) they can then move onto reviewing several articles on the same theme and consolidate the information into a few paragraphs on flipchart paper as a group. Students then find it far easier to take notes and summarise texts after this session without feeling the need to write everything down – a good session for at the start of the year.
