Top ten – descriptive and informative writing

NOTEBOOK 2

This task has a variety of uses and asks students to write down their top tens of listed items. It has been differentiated for my learners by giving word counts for the different levels. For those that have difficulties with writing or young students, images could be used instead.

I have found that the students enjoy this task as a starter, extension or fun break up task in between learning and they also enjoy discussing what they have selected.

Fun prompts for discussion

MULTI COLOURED CHATS

I’m not entirely sure of the source of this activity but it is a fun discussion or writing activity for individuals/small groups perhaps as a starter or for reluctant workers. It asks strange questions such as ‘what would happen if it always snows?’ and gets students into working through thought and interpretation of the questions.

The questions can be used as a Powerpoint or printed and given out to groups for feedback to the class. I’m definitely going to try this myself and I’ll feedback the results.

Ice breaker – Who I am

WHO AM I RESOURCE

I like the idea of using this sheet to get the students thinking about themselves and letting others know what they are interested in. It also gives the teacher an insight into the student when they’re new to the class.  You could get the students to swap their completed sheets and see if they can guess who filled them in; useful for getting to know you.

On the link below there are blank outline sheets for teachers to put their own questions in and also this could be used for research prompts for topics/subjects instead of just getting students to make linear notes.

Class standards activity

You can never get enough ideas for setting class standards at the start of the year, they really do pave the way for what’s acceptable in the class.

I like this idea from mrshawksnest of using flipchart paper and splitting it down the centre with what’s acceptable from either party rather than listing ‘don’ts’. A good activity for a positive start and can be displayed as a poster in the class for future reference.

Interactive Smartboard resources

A great site with lots of ideas, activities and templates for use with an interactive Smartboard. I particularly like the games that challenge, such as Scrabble, and also the maths templates that learners can come up to the board and fill in.

Just click on the link, select a template and then download onto a pc or desktop connected to a Smartboard.

Getting to know you starter activity

This is a good activity to get students thinking about themselves and sharing details with others. It would be good to use this as an icebreaker or writing activity after a few socialising sessions. Students can then edit their work and create a display or the tutor/teacher can collect the work and use it to get to know the student’s likes and dislikes.

Ice breaker – self portraits

This is a great icebreaker, starter or fun activity to break up a session that makes the students laugh and encourages discussion. The original idea is from: http://www.educatorstechnology.com and is very simple to set up. Just place paper and coloured pens on tables and ask students to draw a self portrait of themselves, they need to do it discreetly so everyone else doesn’t see (it’s good fun if the tutor does it too). Once everyone has finished then you can collect the pictures in and display them so students can guess who it is or shuffle them and distribute them to other tables for them to guess.

An alternative to drawing themselves is to give the students the cards from the WHO AM I GAME game I posted earlier and ask the students to draw the famous people then the class have to guess. There are countless possibilities with this game and lots of fun.
